The one who grabbed him turns out to be Jody the horse-faced woman. She stops riding when she sees that Roryâs having trouble breathing, and pulls him off the horse onto his feet, and thatâs when he sees itâs her. She wipes his snotty nose. As well as dangling and bouncing with his head upside down heâs been fighting back tears, so heâs coughing and bubbling. While heâs standing there trying to keep himself upright a few other women ride up and talk to Jody about whether they should tie him up.
âPlease donât,â he snivels.
âEh?â Jody sticks her face close to his. Sheâs yelling. âWhatâs that?â
Rory starts crying properly.
âNo need to get all Guantánamo,â someone else says. âHeâs just a kid.â
âJust a kid, is he?â Jody sounds out of breath too, pumped up on the adrenaline of battle. âYou.â She elbows him, almost knocking him off his feet. âSpeak English, do you?â
âFor Godâs sake.â The other woman dismounts.
âTold us you didnât speak English, didnât they? Any more lies? Eh?â
In the abysm of his misery Rory remembers what Silvia told him to do. âIâm not with them,â he says, between sobs. âIt was an accident.â
Jody snortsâpah!âbut the other woman interrupts.
âWhatâs your name?â she says.
He tells her.
âSo whereâs home for you, Rory?â
A distant roar stops him answering. Itâs Per, far behind, but shouting loud enough for them to hear even though theyâve ridden up out of the town.
âWhat are you doing to him?â Rory says.
âHeâll get what he deserves,â says someone else, still mounted.
âLeaving him for the man-eaters,â Jody says, with grim pleasure.
âBetter than he deserves,â the mounted woman says. âIf they take him before he dies of thirst at least heâll die happy.â
âBet they will too,â another woman says. âBig bastard like that.â Rory thinks he recognizes her accent and looks up to check. Itâs Soph, the skinny black-haired one with the pockmarked cheeks, the one Per and Lino ambushed on the road. âReckon we should have kept him for ourselves.â Kept comes out as kipt. âThe fish get all the fun.â
âWeâll get him gagged soon, donât you worry,â Jody says. âWonât hear him no more after that.â
The one who dismounted looks at Rory closely. Sheâs the one he saw at the head of the charging Riders, standing in the stirrups and yelling. Now sheâs calm she looks incapable of that sort of fury. âIs he your dad?â she says.
âNo.â
âWere any of those people your family?â
He shakes his head.
âNot too many questions, Ellie.â Quistions: this is Soph again. âBetter save them till everyoneâs listening. This little buggerâs going to have a fair bit of explaining to do.â
âI want his arms tied at least,â Jody says. âTill we know what weâre dealing with.â
âReally?â The one called Ellie gives Jody a sarcastic look. â âWhat weâre dealing with?â â
âYou didnât see what happened to Ace. And that other one turned himself into a bird and flew off.â Jodyâs already unwrapping some twine from a pocket. âTurn round, you,â she says, prodding Rory with the toe of her boot.
